Godzilla bearing down on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Godzilla is fascinating in that it is giving a face and a body to our fear of annihilation. In its 1954 incarnation, that annihilation came in the guise of atomic weapons, instruments of mankind’s insane mastery over the world. In the 2014 Godzilla, annihilation is the recognition that we in the human race are ultimately insignificant.
Whereas “Pacific Rim” was a humanist monster film wherein humanity triumphed through the rejection of ego and embracing teamwork, Godzilla’s latest outing is profoundly anti-humanist (not to be confused with misanthropic, which it isn’t), wherein the human race cannot save itself, and the grimmer forces of the universe are wholly unaware of our existence.
